Modern cameras compress the signal internally before writing it to the card—even with the best internal codecs like ProRes or XAVC, there is some reduction of the original sensor information. The Atomos Ninja RAW receives the uncompressed signal directly from the sensor via HDMI and records it in ProRes RAW, preserving the original color temperature and ISO data. The practical result is that white balance and ISO sensitivity can be adjusted after recording in DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, or Adobe Premiere, just as if it had been recorded in the camera's native RAW format.
