What is the Godox X5 and what exactly is it used for?

The Godox X5 is a 23g module that magnetically attaches to the Godox iT32 flash and acts simultaneously as a hot shoe for mounting the unit on the camera and as a 2.4 GHz TTL wireless trigger. Without it, the iT32 functions as a conventional hot shoe flash with TTL and HSS but without radio. With the X5, the iT32 becomes a modular system with remote power control, group management, a USB-C rechargeable lithium battery, and an integrated LED modeling light.

The key to the design is the magnetic mount: the X5 detaches from the iT32 in one simple motion to be used as a standalone off-camera shutter release, and reattaches just as quickly to mount the unit on the hot shoe. All functions are controlled via the iT32's LCD screen—the X5 doesn't have its own display.

How the iT32 + X5 modular system works

The X5 attaches magnetically to the bottom of the iT32. Once attached, the assembly mounts to the camera's hot shoe with the X5 as the interface, and the module's lithium battery powers the entire system—including the iT32—via the internal connection. Power, TTL or Manual mode, channel, and group are controlled directly from the camera. By manually detaching the X5 from the iT32, the flash can be positioned anywhere off-camera while the X5 remains on the hot shoe acting as a transmitter, or vice versa, with the X5 attached to the iT32 and an external transmitter on the camera.

The X5 is charged via the iT32's own USB-C port when both are docked, without the need for an additional cable or separate charger for the module.
