Description

Full-frame 6k "Exmor R" sensor for stunning image quality
The camera’s full-frame 6K sensor delivers superb recording in DCI 4K*, Ultra HD, and HD resolutions. Powerful image processing and oversampling ensure image quality beyond the limits of conventional Super 35mm sensors. The back-illuminated CMOS image sensor also utilizes Sony’s Exmor R technology to improve sensitivity and reduce noise. Compared to a 4K Super 35mm sensor, the FX9’s 6K sensor has more than double the surface area while providing a wider angle of view and shallower depth of field.
DCI 4K (4096 x 2160 in 17:9 recording) available in future firmware versions.

15+ dynamic range for unlimited expression
The FX9 offers over 15 stops of dynamic range beyond the normal range of human perception, offering unprecedented creative freedom in color grading and publishing. This allows camera operators to focus on framing the scene they want while relying on the PXW-FX9 to capture every nuance and detail using internal 4K 4:2:2 10-bit recording or external 16-bit RAW recording.
In grading, colorists can find color and detail beyond the camera operator's normal viewing capabilities to create a final image that accurately represents the mood of the scene.

Dual Base ISO for stunning images in any light
The FX9 features a base ISO of 800 to deliver the optimal level of dynamic range for typical documentary applications, such as shooting outdoors or in brightly lit interiors. A secondary high base ISO of 4000 excels in low-light conditions, such as early morning and late afternoon shots, while maintaining excellent image quality. ISO 4000 is also ideal when using slow lenses. The combination of the dual base ISO and the camera's electronic variable ND filter provides superb creative control in virtually any shooting environment, with next-generation responsiveness to changing conditions.

What is S-Log?
S-Log is a log curve specially optimized for digital motion picture cameras that maximizes image sensor performance. Cinematographers shooting with current REC.709 standards have to choose between sacrificing highlight or shadow detail. S-Log preserves all of this information.

S-Log Advantages
Captures a wide range of tones
The wide variety of tones captured by S-Log makes it especially effective when capturing subjects that tend to experience loss of detail in shadows or exaggerated highlights. Scenes that were previously impossible to capture, such as those with bright sunlight and dark shadows, can be captured in much greater detail.

Records in a wide range of colors
Regular video footage is recorded in the REC.709 color gamut, but S-Log footage is recorded in the much wider S-Gamut color space. Simply put, the wider the color gamut, the more color information can be recorded, and the more vibrant and lifelike the images appear.

More information, greater control
S-Log captures much more information than standard REC.709 footage can record, offering greater control over the finished image in post-production. Instead of having to choose between highlight or shadow exposure during recording, you can capture all this information and choose how it will be displayed later.

S-Cinetone™ color technology

S-Cinetone is the PXW-FX9’s default look, fine-tuned to meet the demands of today’s content creators with rich mid-range colors, attractive facial tones, and a softer tonal look, developed with the same expertise as Sony’s world-leading VENICE digital cinema camera. S-Cinetone means that, straight from the camera, your content looks fresh and vivid, with subjects really standing out, while retaining plenty of freedom in post-production thanks to the high-performance full-frame image sensor.

FPS Selection

Choose frame rates from 1 fps to 180 fps* for stunning slow and fast motion recordings. The FX9 creates an immersive image with a wide-angle look and the shallower depth of field provided by its full-frame sensor in combination with slow and fast motion. The FX9 also offers a Quality Priority setting** that maximizes image quality in Full HD slow motion with advanced oversampling technology.

Up to 120 fps with Ver1.0. Full-HD 180fps will be supported with future firmware.

In full frame scan mode: selectable at 1-30 fps / In S35 scan mode: selectable at 1-60 fps

Improved Fast Hybrid AF system, captures the action

Effortlessly track fast-moving subjects with sharp focus, even when using wide lens aperture settings to maintain a shallow depth of field with the camera's full-frame sensor. Developed by Sony camera engineers, Enhanced Fast Hybrid AF combines phase-detection AF for fast, accurate subject tracking with contrast AF for exceptional focusing accuracy. Additionally, Face Detection intelligently recognizes and locks onto human faces.

The 561-point phase-detection AF sensor covers approximately 94% of the width and 96% of the height of the image area, delivering precise and smooth AF tracking, even with fast-moving subjects.

Customizable AF settings

The FX9's comprehensive autofocus setup provides the creative flexibility to integrate with any project.

7-level AF transition speeds from Fast, switching between subjects as quickly as possible, to Slow, where the speed is reduced to suit a more measured shooting style, such as a historical TV drama.

The 5-level AF subject shift sensitivity ranges from Locked, ignoring other moving subjects in the frame, to Responsive, which shifts focus from one subject to another – ideal for shooting between race cars as they pass by.

E-mount optics

Experience smooth, responsive autofocus with every E-mount lens, including Sony's new Cinema Lens series, featuring superior optical performance and operability for demanding cinematic applications. Advanced E-mount lever lock operation enables quick and easy lens swapping, plus increased stability and security with large lenses.

Electronic variable ND filter

Gain even greater creative control with Sony's built-in electronic variable neutral density (ND) filter. Set it to Auto, or adjust the filter density manually in smooth increments from 1/4 to 1/128 while shooting, for perfectly exposed images without affecting depth of field as lighting conditions change. Use higher density settings with a slower shutter speed for stunning artistic effects.

Recording modes

The FX9 has a selection of backup recording modes that will help ensure your recording is secure. Simul Rec will allow simultaneous HD recording to two media cards. 4K/HD Sub Rec mode allows 4K recording to one card and MPEG HD recording to another. XAVC Proxy Rec is also available, offering a small 9MB/s proxy file size that can be easily sent over the network. Additionally, there is a maximum of 28 seconds of cached recording to prevent missed shots.
