In addition to optimized power distribution, this lens features two SLD (Super Low Dispersion) elements and two FLD (F Low Dispersion) elements. To deliver the high resolution that brings out the best in 50-megapixel DSLRs and above, the focusing mechanism features SIGMA's Floating Focus System. Regardless of the distance from the subject, this lens delivers superior performance from the center to the edges of the image. By also minimizing distortion, the lens delivers pristine image quality, without the need for digital adjustment during image processing.

Exclusive low dispersion glass.

The degree to which light is refracted by glass depends on the wavelength of the light. This causes different colors of light to focus at slightly different points. The result is chromatic aberration, the color fringing that is particularly noticeable in telephoto lenses.

Most chromatic aberration can be eliminated by combining a high-refractive convex element with a low-refractive concave element. However, residual chromatic aberration known as “secondary spectrum” may remain. To minimize this secondary spectrum, which can be a serious problem in conventional lenses, SIGMA lenses offer up to three types of exclusive low-dispersion glass that deliver superior performance: ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion), SLD (Special Low Dispersion), and FLD (“F” Low Dispersion). In particular, FLD elements offer ultra-low dispersion in combination with high transmittance and the anomalous dispersion characteristics of fluorite. The meticulous deployment of these exclusive low-dispersion glass types and the optimization of energy distribution gives SIGMA lenses superlative image reproduction unencumbered by residual chromatic aberration.

From the beginning of the design process, SIGMA measured flare and ghosting to establish an optical design that was resistant to strong incident light sources such as backlighting. During the prototyping stage, SIGMA used not only simulations but actual photographic experiments to evaluate flare and ghosting under multiple criteria, identify the causes of these issues in a wide range of situations, and take measures to mitigate them. Furthermore, SIGMA's Super Multi-Layer Coating helps further reduce flare and ghosting and delivers sharp, high-contrast images, even in backlit conditions.

The Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) delivers ample torque to the focusing group for exceptional speed, ensuring exceptionally stable performance even at low speeds. Together with the optimized AF algorithm, this feature offers the ability to shoot with rapid autofocus. Additionally, the Focus Limiter makes AF highly precise at the subject's distance for even more agile performance.

Fast AF with manual focus control.

The Full-time Manual Focus function allows the lens to switch to manual focus by simply rotating the focus ring.
