A new optical design with two precision XA elements eliminates sagittal flare, a common distortion in large-aperture lenses. This problem can cause unnatural diffusion of point light sources, which is accentuated at the edges of the image.

A new optical design that reduces the overall lens diameter by employing two XA elements (one for the normally larger front element) and a newly developed DDSSM focusing system combine to achieve a very light overall weight of just 445 grams (15.7 oz). This reduced size and weight make this lens ideal for compact E-mount bodies, offering excellent mobility.

The 11-blade circular aperture mechanism enhances smooth, natural bokeh thanks to an advanced design and manufacturing process with precise control of spherical distortion. A minimum focusing distance of 0.24 m and a maximum magnification of 0.17x produce close-up shots that, in conjunction with the wide-angle view, create spectacular perspectives that also take advantage of deep, vibrant bokeh.
